I’ve been teaching Music since I left college in 2001! Yep, nineteen years. It honestly only feels like it was last year. But it wasn’t – it was almost 20 years ago.
When I took a break in December 2014 after many, many years of teaching, I had decided that when I started back it was going to be different. I wanted to teach differently, more effectively and more importantly, teach ‘music’.
Piano teaching has changed so much since I was a child. I was never taught how to actually play songs or tunes I knew. This is no fault of my past teachers, it was just the way it was. Now we are in the 21st century teaching 21st century students. It requires a different way of teaching.

I no longer teach how I was taught and students don’t get a ‘cookie-cutter style’ lesson with me. Students will experience the full spectrum of piano playing techniques music from chord playing, pattern play, improvisation, composition, scales and yes, exams where appropriate. We may not prepare for an exam every year and as an experienced teacher and musicologist, let me tell you, that’s okay! Exams have their place but alongside the skills previously listed. I want students to be musicians in every sense, not just measured by exam results.
